AIS has announced expansion of its SCANALYST 3 family to include verification of Direct Parts Marking (DPM Barcode). DPM is a key marking technology using laser or peening to create a permanent 2D barcode right on the part.  There is no label or package required with DPM and the mark is useful through the life of the product.  The identifying mark is actually part of the product. These features make it the method of choice for healthcare, defense and manufacturing identification and traceability requirements.

 

According to Jeff Nolan of AIS, “Our SCANALYST 3 System is very flexible and we wanted to use it to tackle one of the most DPM Example 3difficult barcode printing tasks, DPM or Direct Parts Marking.  Some of the DPM barcode applications include medical instruments and medical devices (UDI), defense and aerospace industry materials (UID) automotive and electronic industry automation and traceability.

 

“These applications require ‘Doing it right’. The cost of a mistake could be very high so the risk must be minimized.  That is why the FDA and DOD have set minimum acceptable quality levels for their UDI and DSCSA programs.”

Specifications

SCANALYST 3 DPM verifies Datamatrix and QR barcodes using ISO iso/iec tr 29158 which provides a guideline for verification of direct part marking. This TR replaced the AIM DPM Guideline (AIM DPM 1-2006). This ISO method is based on previous verification methods and adjusts for the nature of DPM.

SCANALYST 3 DPM also verifies all common linear and 2D barcodes (including Datamatrix and QR) using the standard methods for verifying printed barcodes using ISO 15415 and ISO 15416. These test methods are designed for the more common print methods where good contrast and definition are more readily possible.

Direct Part Marking Uses

DPM can be used in a wide variety of situations. The main benefit is that unlike barcode labeling, the DPM mark always stays with the part.  This makes it an ideal solution for applications with traceability requirements.  These include UDI in healthcare (Unique Device Identifier) and UID in defense (Unique Identification), military MIL-STD-130), commercial aircraft and electronics.

DPM barcodes are also used widely in manufacturing for automated assembly and to automatically adjust tooling for variations in parts.  The DPM barcode mark can carry a significant amount of data beyond a simple part number.  Since the part carrying the mark is expensive, and a good DPM mark is essential in these applications, verification is essential as well.

Verification of your DPM marks is critical to successful implementations. Since these DPM barcodes are expected to last a long time, survive through all the part is exposed to and then be readable, you can imagine the impact of starting out with a compromise on quality.  That will be unacceptable.  If you start with a DPM that has been verified and has a good grade then you have a much better chance of reading it later in the parts life.
