Celebrating 40 Years of Innovation and Integrity
In 2025, we proudly celebrate AIS’s 40th year in business. It’s a moment to reflect on the customers who’ve inspired us, the technologies that have shaped our journey, and the challenges we’ve met head-on — all while looking toward the future with clarity and purpose.
Who We Are
AIS was founded on a simple credo: “Do it right.”
In today’s fast-moving technology landscape, our clients rely on us to solve complex problems with precision, speed, and confidence. We specialize in barcode and RFID technologies and actively support the communication standards that industries use to implement policy and regulatory changes. These automatic identification systems have transformed industries by instantly turning physical activity into reliable, shareable data — and we’ve been fortunate to play a key role in that transformation.
With deep experience in AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Collection), we help organizations build a culture of quality, data integrity, and compliance — ensuring their operations are both accurate and future-ready.
40 Years of Firsts
While our roots are in retail, AIS has contributed to almost every industry that uses barcode technology. Our customer-driven approach has led to both expected achievements and remarkable, sometimes unexpected, innovations:
- 1989: Developed a rugged, high-temperature RFID tracking system for industrial environments above 300°F — one of the first of its kind.
- 1993: Released the first PC-based ISO barcode verifier — SCANALYST — just three years after the introduction of ANSI/ISO barcode quality standards.
- Delivered and supported hundreds of barcode printers across manufacturing sites, maintaining ISO Grade 4 quality for high system performance and reduced downtime.
- Consulted and trained teams in Europe, Asia, and South America on barcode and RFID applications.
- Introduced SCANALYST 2, the first 1D/2D barcode ISO verifier, supporting the rise of high-density 2D symbols.
- Built covert barcode systems, developed marking solutions for nuclear material security during the fall of the Soviet Union, and expanded into (and later exited from) Asia.
- Engineered Print–ISO Inspect–Apply systems and compliance audit services, supporting customers with documentation, procedures, and recordkeeping.
- Launched an RFID container tracking system using HF read/write tags.
- Developed SCANALYST 3, integrating FDA-defined field validation and automated GUDID database tests.
- Prototyped IoT-enabled RFID/barcode systems for cold chain logistics.
- Released SCANALYST 4, the first verifier built to support GMP barcode compliance, now powering our fourth major release since 1993.
And yes — we’ve tackled some unusual challenges too:
- Built a tracking system to alert when government scientists accidentally took sensitive hard drives home.
- Created an interactive kiosk for NYC students — a barcode-scanning hurdy-gurdy that taught kids how technology works.
- Designed a comprehensive, verifiable voter ID system for national elections and submitted it to the U.S. Congressional Committee on Rules & Administration.
Through it all, we’ve remained guided by our clients’ needs, backed by strong foundations in engineering and computer science, and committed to advancing both our clients’ goals and our industry.
The Next 40 Years
Barcodes Everywhere
With over 10 billion barcode scans per day and rising, we expect to see even more growth driven by smartphones, new global standards, and expanded use cases.
Retail
Expect continued advances in consumer safety, anti-counterfeiting, and automated product recalls, all powered by smarter barcodes.
Healthcare
The FDA’s efforts to standardize medical device, pharmaceutical, and laboratory data will revolutionize real-world evidence collection. A new industry will emerge to leverage this data for better care, lower costs, and improved outcomes.
Manufacturing
Barcodes have long supported supply chains, but now manufacturers are adding high-density 2D and DPM barcodes to control automation, instruct robots, and ensure the best product pairing. As customization increases, expect a blend of standardized and proprietary solutions.
Logistics
Barcode drives logistics — and updates are coming. New 2D shipping labels will include richer data to enhance global trade, optimize last-mile delivery, and even guide drones to your doorstep.
Enterprises & Compliance
For large enterprises operating across geographies, supply chains, and partners, barcode compliance is no longer optional — it’s essential. A single non-compliant barcode can threaten a brand’s reputation and disrupt entire networks.
Your barcode is now a digital ambassador for your brand. It must be readable, accurate, and aligned with purchasing and regulatory systems that depend on it.
That’s why AIS remains focused on compliance — combining deep knowledge of verification technologies with an understanding of industry standards, regulations, and their real-world intent. Our SCANALYST platform is field-upgradeable and designed to flex with your changing environment. Being nimble and able to respond to challenges and opportunities is a strategic advantage in today’s volatile markets. Even if you are not yet ready for an enterprise wide solution, you can find comfort in our upgredability and our passion to stay ahead and ‘Do it right’ when the time is right.
